Thomas J. Karem

In my youth, I personally experienced being injured by the negligence of others, bad faith tactics of insurance companies, and low ball offers to settle claims. My mother was manipulated by an insurance adjuster to accept less than fair compensation. From my experiences, I understand the challenges you face and diligently advocate for you for fair and reasonable compensation from insurance companies.

My course toward the practice of law further developed through varied careers, first, in the finance and sales industries, then building speculation homes, and, finally, commercial construction management. I constructed quality homes and managed multi-million dollar private and public projects, estimated project costs and bid on projects, conducted value engineering, managed projects on fast-track schedules, coordinated subcontractors and design-build teams of engineers and architects, drafted contracts, moderated disputes (to keep the lawyers out of the dispute and projects on schedule). I understand the construction issues that may arise through first-hand experience—the challenges of managing difficult contractors and clients, avoiding protracted litigation and expense, and resolving the dispute reasonably and inexpensively. My first hand experience in the construction industry gave me the wisdom and experience to help you resolve your construction issue and help you move forward with your project.

I have combined legal experience of more than fourteen years. I worked through law school to support my daughter at a law firm focusing on family and construction law. It was a practical education as opposed to the theoretical education of law school. Once graduated from law school, I was a law clerk for the Montana 18th Judicial District Court, Gallatin County. This was an invaluable education and experience. It provided me practical insight on how the legal system really works, not just in theory. From there, I began my private practice.

As a prosecutor for the City of Bozeman, I enjoyed the experience of trial by fire. I tried dozens of bench and jury trials. This, too, was an invaluable experience and education in trial work. In private practice, I've tried dozens of cases from family law to civil rights in state and federal courts. I have represented people on appeals to state and federal courts from the Montana Supreme Court to the United States Ninth Circuit Court. I have the appellate experience to competently and diligently represent you.

I'm admitted to practice before all state District Courts, United States Federal District Court for Montana, the Montana Supreme Court, and the United States Ninth Circuit Court.

In my personal time, I enjoy the abundance of recreation Montana has to offer, from bow hunting to fly fishing, and from whitewater rafting to ice climbing. Spending quality time with family and friends, preparing fine cuisine, and sharing the outdoors with my nieces and nephews are the joys of my life.
